Toyota Cleared in 2009 Wrongful Death Case

A Los Angeles jury found Toyota not at fault for the 2009 death of Noriko Uno whose 2006 Camry suddenly accelerated causing her to lose control, strike a telephone pole and total her vehicle. Uno died in the crash and in a surprising twist the car manufacturer was cleared of the charges against them while a codefendant was ordered to pay Uno’s family $10 million in damages.

Toyota has been named in hundreds of personal injury suits because of the same issue with spontaneous acceleration, and lawyers for Uno’s family claimed the Camry’s lack of a brake override system, which may have prevented her death.

Codefendant Olga Belo initially collided with Uno’s Camry, causing her to accelerate accidentally and uncontrollably. The jury’s verdict strapped Belo with $10 million in damages for the Uno family, though Belo’s attorney could not be reached for comment.

Many cases of wrongful death and injury from Toyota’s acceleration issues are still pending litigation.
